The national identity that a group of people saw in p’ansori allowed some to continue their studies. Han Sŭngho, who used to be supported by those people, was often told not to stop but to continue his studies. They encouraged him, saying, “P’ansori is our national spirit.”31 The association between national identity and p’ansori, which grew during the period of Japanese occupation, continued even after the liberation in 1945, and caused p’ansori to be more popular than taejung gayo (popular songs) among some people in the late 1940s. Han Sŭngho, who performed for the people who had immigrated into the Manchurian area of China in 1946, narrated his experience to Yi Kyusŏp, who wrote a biographical book of p’ansori singers:

People were living in a group in Manchuria. Then, famous popular singers, Paek Nyŏnsŏl and Chang Sejŏng, sang in the same performance in which we participated. When the popular singers sang, people did not show much response, but when we sang p’ansori and yukchabaegi, people sang and danced, embracing each other. The performance place was full of crying and tears (Yi Kyusŏp 1994: 181).
